Youth Learn to Sew Series - Level 1

This is a kid-friendly, gender-neutral program that provides the necessary foundation in basic sewing skills and equipment usage. The program is designed to keep the participants engaged through a series of fun & easy-to-complete projects.
Sewing machines and all project materials are included! Students will have the opportunity to pick out their fabric for the various projects:
Class 1: Learn Machine & Sewing Basics
Class 2: Straight stitching & pressing while making a Patchwork Pillow
Class 3: Seam finishing while making a Drawstring Bag
Class 4: Make straps while constructing a Crossbody Bag

The course is offered for ages 7 through 13 and is limited to 4 participants. Please note that 15 minutes is scheduled at the start and finish of each class for settling in (hanging up coats, chatting, checking out the shop, visiting with Maggie the staff dog) and workspace prep/clean-up!

If the participant has a sewing machine please bring it to become familiar with it; otherwise, sewing machines are supplied for the duration of the workshop.

A sewing kit will be required, consisting of:
  • thread snips/scissors
  • seam ripper
  • straight pins
  • Fabric marker & chalk
  • sewing gauge
  • 1 spool of thread in a neutral colour
Most of these items are available in our shop & students will receive a 15% discount on all purchases related to their class. If you'd like to make this process even easier, click the CLASS + MATERIALS Option and we will have a kit prepared for them!

All workshop participants are required to sign a waiver before the workshop. The entire waiver can be viewed at the bottom of our classes page. (East Coast Quilt Co. Workshop Waiver)

WHAT IS IN A BASIC SEWING KIT:   For most of our classes we ask you to bring a basic sewing kit which usually contains: a rotary cutter and/or scissors, small snipping scissors, straight pins, a pin cushion or collector, seam ripper, a spool of neutral 50 wt cotton thread, extra bobbins, notebook, pen/pencil, ruler(s), etc.
