Introduction to Weaving

Join instructor Jess McDonald for this intensive workshop where you will enjoy weaving an Ashford multi-shaft table loom! Evening, Weekend, and Daytime sessions are available!

Weaving is one of the oldest textile crafts used to create woven cloth, accessories, and home decor. This includes tea towels, scarves, and fabrics for garments. In this one-day workshop, students will experience the joy of weaving on a pre-warped loom using cotton and wool fibres.

Students will be given a brief history of weaving, shown how to operate the loom, and be introduced to a variety of weave structures and techniques including:

  • Plain weave
  • Twill weave
  • Basketweave
  • Rag Weaving
  • Changing colours while weaving
  • Finishing for hanging
Folks will leave with a creative sampler wall hanging showcasing the many applications of weaving! Instructions will be given on how to finish off the piece and hang it on a dowel.

All materials are included in the cost of this workshop! Please bring along a pair of sharp snips, a notebook, and enthusiasm to learn!

Please note that these table looms require participants to stand for the majority of the workshop. If you have any concerns about this, please ask how we can accommodate you.

The class size is limited to four people per workshop to ensure students receive as much guidance as possible. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and for those with some experience who would like a refresher without the hassle of setting up the loom!

This workshop is suited for adults (age 15+)
