Birds on a Wire - Wool Applique Wall Hanging by Wendy Williams
Birds on a Wire by Wendy Williams is the perfect introduction to wool applique! This creative wall hanging finishes at approximately 36in x 42in and can be personalized to any colourful aesthetic. This project is a combination of hand stitching and machine sewing.
This is a fun wool appliqué class meant for the confident beginner. No previous experience is required. Basic stitches will be taught in class and other more complicated stitches can be used if desired. The workshop fee includes the book, Wild Blooms & Colorful Creatures by Wendy Wiliams, black fusible bias tape for the wires, black wool for the bird silhouettes and three different green wools for the stems and leaves. If you already have a copy of the book, we will refund that portion of the fee.
SYLLABUS
The first class will concentrate on cutting out the bird silhouettes and placement of wires. You can bring along your chosen background or purchase from the shop selection. Discussion of suitable flower motifs and felt colours will help you choose wools for the second class and decide on borders. You will NOT need a sewing machine as borders will be added at home after the first class.
The black silhouettes contrast nicely with the background. The garden at the bottom is worked with long stems and leaves that reach up to the birds above. Students may choose to do 1 border, or they can create a scrappy border as Wendy has created via the pattern in the book.
- 1.1m Low volume print for the background
- 1/4m For border 1 (However, if you are only doing one border as in the workshop sample, you will need about 6 or 7 strips of your chosen border width)
- For a scrappy second border, check the requirements in your pattern
- A variety of colourful wool squares for the background of your flowers
- A variety of flower or circle motifs for flower centers in quilting cotton
- Scraps of paisley print for leaves (optional)
- Size 8 Perle cotton threads in a variety of colours (embroidery floss can be substituted)
- 1/2 m of freezer paper
- 1/4 m of lightweight fusible interfacing (optional)
- Chenille #24 needle or any sharp needle with a large enough eye for your threads.
- Sharp scissors
- Basic sewing kit (see below)
This class is suited for adults (age 15+)
