
Learn to Weave Series - Level 1

Weaving is one of the oldest textile crafts used to create woven cloth, accessories, and home decor. This includes tea towels, scarves, and fabrics for garments. In this 6 session series, students will be walked through the complete process of project planning, dressing the loom, and weaving on a multishaft Ashford table loom! Join instructor Jess McDonald on this adventure of creating cloth.
Skills Taught
- project calculations and calculating sett*
- creating a warp on a warping board or mill
- rolling on a warp with even tension
- threading heddles in a straight draw
- sleying the reed
- weaving using a stick shuttle and/or boat shuttle
- changing colours, plain weave, and/or twill weave
- finishing techniques
*Students will have the option of making a table runner, a set of placemats, or a cloth which they can use in future projects. Maximum woven width of 14 inches by maximum length of 80 inches.

The class size is limited to four people per workshop to ensure students receive as much guidance as possible. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners, those who want to learn how to set up the loom, or those wanting to create in a supportive environment!
SYLLABUS
Class 1: Introduction to course, weaving theory, project planning, creating warp
Class 2: Rolling on warp & threading heddles
Class 3: Reef threading, tying on, spreading warp, planning to weave
Class 4 - 5: Weaving project
Class 6: Weaving and finishing
SUPPLIES NEEDED
- 4/8 Cotton (1 - 2 spools required base on project choice!)
- Notebook and pencil/pen
- Tapestry/darning needle
- Dedication to learn!
If students require more time to weave, they can rent the loom at the shop for an additional $10 a day.
Please note that these table looms require participants to stand for the majority of the workshop. If you have any concerns about this, please ask how we can accommodate you.

This workshop is suited for adults (age 15+)
WORKSHOP CANCELLATION POLICY:
If you cannot attend a workshop (either one-day, or a multi-day series) and it is 14 or more days before the start date, you will receive a store credit for 75% of the value of the workshop. If you cancel less than 14 days before the start of the workshop, you will NOT receive a refund or store credit. No credit or refund will be given for a "no-show" in the workshop regardless of the reason. So please ensure that you can attend before signing up. EAST COAST QUILT Co reserves the right to cancel workshops/events for any reason. If this happens, you will be refunded your full workshop fee.

Instructor Bio: | Jess McDonald (BFA 2019) is a textile artist based here in St. John's, Newfoundland and is the provincial representative for the Guild of Canadian Weavers. As a lover of all things textiles, Jessica brings traditional crafts to light through exploration and teaching. For over 10 years she has been teaching private and public workshops in sewing, stitching, and weaving. Jess is passionate about creating community through making and sharing her knowledge of craft with others. |
