Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses EPP (English Paper Piecing) - 8 month program (Oct to May)

Join instructor Jess McDonald for this epic EPP project inspired by Lucy Boston!

Patchwork of the Crosses is an iconic English Paper Piecing quilt pattern designed by Lucy Boston. This quilt has been created and recreated by countless quilters throughout the years, and is one of the top 10 most famous patchwork quilts in the world. It uses honeycomb (elongated hexagons) to create square-shaped blocks, beginning with a cross in the middle of each block and radiating out for an additional 3 rounds. Its simplistic design gives way for colour exploration and fussy cutting to create kaleidoscope designs. Students can choose to create their blocks using solids, blenders, florals, or even scraps (just like the original Lucy Boston quilt!). This is a choose-your-adventure kind of quilt!

Each block consists of 1-inch honeycombs (elongated hexagons) and 1-inch squares and is perfect for an ambitious beginner who has tried their hand at EPP, or for intermediate makers ready to tackle a new hand-stitched project!

Students will be guided through fabric choices, as there is no set collection for this project. Once fabric choices are made, students will be guided through the process of cutting out their pieces! Your instructor will show you how to fussy cut using The Patchwork Collection Templates and the Fussy Cutting Mirror for effective designs.

The resulting quilt is both beautiful and functional, making it an ideal project for anyone who loves sewing and quilting, as well as those who appreciate the beauty of hand pieced work. The finished size is approximately 42 in x 54 in with room for expansion.

This program runs for 8 months and meets one morning or evening per month! EPP is a slow stitch piecing method, and students will be required to do work in between sessions. Students must be comfortable with threading needles and stitching small stitches by hand. Students must also be comfortable using a rotary cutter and ruler.

Want to get ahead of the game? Sign up for our Lucy Boston PREP workshop, HERE! This extra class gives students a head start on choosing fabrics, using templates, and how to begin the cutting process.
